Our curriculum is strategically planned to ensure that throughout their years of learning and exposure to our curriculum children learn about social injustice and cultural development. This is achieved through ensuring both are carefully woven throughout our curriculum as a ‘golden thread’, e.g in history children learn about the Titanic and within their learning they learn about the tiers within society at that time and how classes were treated differently.
Throughout our explicit curriculum learning and the school’s strong values, which were used to form our Golden Rules, children are taught about and learn to follow the British Values, thus preparing them to be successful in modern British society. In assemblies, educational visits, discussions, and literature children have the opportunity to learn more about the world/country/county/town they live in, the people within in and the people that make up our society. Through our RSHE curriculum children learn about health relationships and the diversity of relationships; this learning is carefully sequenced and planned to ensure it is not only progressive but also age appropriate.
We also teach PSHE and RE across all year groups and again these areas of learning are both sequential and progressive. Children learn about people of different faiths and cultures, along with how to keep themselves safe from home (including keeping safe online). Throughout their learning children are encouraged to share their views, listen carefully to others and respect and value that others’ views may differ from their own, along with developing a thirst and fascination about others and the world around them.
Through our citizenship programme children can and are keen as they move into Key Stage Two, take on roles of responsibility throughout the school. These roles are progressive and start with playing an active role in their class (class monitors) and move to taking a wider active role across the school (School Prefect). Children learn to become active citizens and contribute positively to the Roskear society and the wider community.
The school offers a wide selection of extra curriculum clubs, and these prove to be very popular with the children. We strive to ensure there is a club to pique the interest of every learner. Our clubs are often run across mixed year groups and this enables children to have the opportunity to learn with and alongside children they would not normally, thus supporting our PSHE curriculum. We also offer residential visits in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 which offer the children to experience life beyond Camborne and Cornwall, widening their own life experiences and opening their eyes to greater cultural diversity.
More recently we have created a list of ‘45 things to do’ before you leave Roskear. This list consists of the things that we feel every child should experience when growing up to ensure everyone of our children experience ‘cultural capital’. These experiences have been carefully woven into our curriculum offer and include a plethora of educational visits to excite, engage and generate awe and wonder.
