Rationale
 
Music  creates social cohesion, it speaks when words  can fail and wherever you go in the world, it is understood. Musicians have used sound and music since the dawn of primitive man as a way of expressing themselves and getting themselves heard. Music is a universal gift and its power to connect people it without question. It is an artform with human interaction at its centre.
 
Music stimulates the brain which in turn can promote relaxation, alleviate anxiety and pain. Furthermore, learning a musical instrument provides a platform for pupils to achieve through discipline and perseverance. Music is a creative outlet and and can be used to convey a political message, an emotion or just for sheer joy. 
INTENT
 
To ensure that music does not become an elitist pastime where only children of families that can afford to pay have access to it, we have adopted the  Charanga schemes of work and the DFE Model Music curriculum as basis on which to develop own own small steps of progression, to create a bespoke curriculum for our pupils.
 
Our small steps identify the landmarks of musical understanding that pupils are expected to achieve, in addition to the range of musical styles and traditions that they are to experience; ensuring that different initiatives such as whole-class instrumental  programmes are planned as well as taking opportunities to raise standards of singing including in class lessons and whole school singing sessions.
