Introduction to Units of Learning

Our units of learning  are structured using half-termly whole school themes, with a geography or history focus. Geography units develop the concepts of place, space and scale. Where possible they provide the geographical context for the following history topic. In history, the periods studied enable pupils to make connections in local and world history by developing the key concepts of: chronology, evidence, significance, change and interpretation.

Our Medium Term Plans (MTP) are supported by ‘small steps in progression’ documents- ensuring a progression in both concepts and content. Where possible the MTP interleaves science, music, art, DT, PSHE and RE to provide depth and breadth and interconnectedness within and the topic.

We are confident that this approach offers a truly broad and balanced curriculum to all pupils. It offers the chance for all pupils to encounter and understand the very best that has been thought, said, sung, danced, made and played. We believe that this will inspire pupils to go on and excel in their chosen field, with the widest range of opportunities available to them.

 Below are the Unit of Learning  titles which the different year groups will be studying this year.
 Cultural Capital and British Values
The curriculum is designed to address 'cultural poverty' and develop Cultural Capital. Where possible teachers try and expand children's learning on a global level. Children will learn about other countries, faiths, foods, education and religions. Where possible, links to very contrasting international schools will be made with some long successful partnerships already running. They will be taught in a way that promotes tolerance, respect and understanding of others faiths and beliefs and in a way that is reflective of being a British citizen. i.e.. democracy, mutual respect, the rule of law and as mentioned tolerance of others faiths and beliefs.
Whole school assembly themes.
Assembly themes are linked to our PSHE (Jigsaw curriculum) . Team Leaders hold a Key Stage  assembly, every week, covering the following themes: New beginnings; resilience; making mistakes; positive learning habits; anti radicalisation; keeping safe (safeguarding)and what to do; behaviour and behaviour for learning; respect; cultural diversity; British law; Getting on and falling out; online safety and attendance. Other themes may be covered as and when there is a need to do so, for example natural disasters , significant calendar events or global issues  that may have arisen. 
Our Music Leader provides a weekly singing assembly. A  member of the Senior Leadership Team will lead a 'Celebration' assembly, each week, recognising those pupils who are : following the Golden Rules; that have  achieved a high ' Accelerated Reader - word count;'  ' the class with the most Maths Whizz homework maths points and  pupils that have achieved an  'active' award.
