Children's University

At Roskear we are part of ‘Children’s University’. The Children’s University aims to promote a love of learning in children. It encourages and celebrates participation in extra-curricular activities in and outside of school. The impact of these activities is proven to be positive, creating a level playing field of opportunity and opening up access to ALL children.

Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can positively impact on attainment, increase a pupil’s positive identification with school, and build self-confidence and resilience.

Children’s University aims for the following outcomes for all children:

  • They feel they have grown in confidence and self-belief
  • They have enjoyed new experiences, in new places and want to keep exploring
  • They believe they have a broader range of essential skills
  • They feel empowered to make positive choices about their future
  • They see learning that is fun, aspirational and lifelong
  • They feel their eyes have been opened to a multiplicity of learning activities and opportunities
  • They feel celebrated for their commitment to learning by their family, school and community

As a school we celebrate children’s achievements for the hours of extra learning that they do out of school time.  As children build up their hours and reach their milestones, they are awarded their certificates in a special celebration assembly where parents/carers and families are also invited in to join in with the celebrations. Once children have achieved 100 hours or further gold awards they are invited to attend a special awards graduation ceremony with their families and receive a special award!

Dylan is part of the Children’s University. So far he has been awarded his silver diploma award for achieving 265 hours of extra learning outside of the school day. He has since achieved 300 hours and will soon receive his gold diploma award! Well done, Dylan. Dylan spends his time outside of school doing swimming lessons, every Saturday he takes part with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and in the holidays he goes along to the camps to play football for 5 hours. He has also done judo and karate. Dylan has accumulated hours during the weekends, visiting Bristol Museum, The Eden Project and The Roman Bath.

Carmen (YR) and Emily (Y1) attend the Reading Café at school every week. Emily also does gymnastics. They are currently working towards their bronze award.
